Foci – it’s a fancy term for areas of focus. Multiple foci might actually be redundant, and yet here we are, dealing with multiple areas of focus - - - every… single… day!
Think of the last time you didn’t feel like you had more than one thing to focus on.
Personally, I can’t remember when I only had one project, one action step, one individually identifiable thing that I was focused on without a list of 16 things to do when I got through with that one thing. When I go to the gas station, I’m focused on getting gas AND what I’ll be doing after I fill up my tank. Even on vacation, there’s a lot to focus on.
The multiple foci thing isn’t going to change. Our current world state demands that we’re on alert for new information every single moment. Remember that “multi-tasking” isn’t a thing – what we do is called Toggle-Tasking. We flip between item to item and back again. Some do it better than others.
It would be easy to become scattered. So many things vie for our attention, from family to business, to world news, to online distractions – everyone wants a piece of your mind-share.
That becomes energy expensive.
Tracking and toggling. No wonder people are anxious about keeping up and depressed when they can’t.
If I asked, you would tell me that you are deliberate and focused when working on (most of) your tasks. My question is then, are you deliberate and focused when you step away from them?
This is where, as an elite mindstate coach helping people to shift into high performance and uplevel their game, I help you get clear about what it takes to BE AS FOCUSED DOING NOTHING as you are in executing a super important project.
Yes, mindfulness matters. And as a reminder, that’s just a wonderful term for being deliberate in your focus. Whether that’s your breathing or the flow of doing one part of your work, be in it without forcing it. Also, be in it without being swept away by it (as in scrolling on social media).
Having multiple foci is not going to change. What will change are the nature and intensity of your focus. This will take practice as you find a way to control the intensity.
You’ll always have multiple areas of focus. Make sure it’s focus and not distraction.
Practice being super intentional when you’re in it. Then, back up and get super intentional about letting go.
That could be what’s next on your list: Letting Go.
Don’t let your mind race to define what that means. Just embrace the concept.
Be deliberate.
LAST CHANCE – I want to sneak this in here before I sign off. My signature Exponential Success Summit has room for just a dozen people. We’re pretty full right now. Here’s the question to consider boldly: If you’re serious about wanting to uplevel your life and you’re willing to invest $3,997 in tuition to do so, AND you can make it to New York next week (the 13th and 14th) NOW is really the last chance to be considered for the program. Admission is by invitation or application. What that means is, if you want in, you need to respond to this blog post today.
Keep making your magic and I’ll see you here next week!
