Yikes! It’s December already.
I know… I didn’t want to be reminded either. And yet, here we are!
This is the season of joy, of giving, of credit card debt, and overeating. It’s the season of forced family gatherings or happy get-togethers. Or maybe a mix of all of that.
No one day or month or “season” is good or bad. No moment is good or bad.
Do bad things happen? Yes.
Do wonderful things happen? Yes.
Can you control the events that will happen this month and the emotional reactions you’ll invoke from being with certain people or giving just the right gift?
Nope. No, you can’t.
Can you control your response to absolutely everything?
Yes, yes you can!
Look, I know that A LOT of people look forward to this time of year. It’s also true that for many, this time of year evokes memories of hard times in the past. And there are many going through hard times now.
What you have control over is you.
Someone pushes your buttons or triggers you? Your choice to respond or not. If you choose to respond, it’s your choice how to respond.
This month is also a time when people do end-of-year pushes to get that final bit done. And what I’m about to offer you is permission to take a look at what you’re pushing for. This will set you up for success in the New Year, as well.
What you’re chasing, and the energy you’re putting into it right now, does it make you happy? Do you love the outcome, knowing that you will have completed something significant? Do you love that you’re creating a building block for tomorrow?
No? You’re pushing hard because you’re supposed to?
Can you focus on something that’s so compelling for you that you must get it done? Like me, for instance, I have blog posts to get out. In all the time I’ve written, I’ve never missed a week. It’s my blog. I could miss a week. And yet, I’m compelled to write. This is MY agenda. It makes me happy. And a lot of the other work I do, from the elite 1:1 coaching to the summits I run, those make me happy. I’m compelled to produce them.
Are there things in my business I don’t love doing? Sure. But THE business is what keeps me moving! So pay attention to this:
When you feel like you have to push it, it’s probably somebody else’s agenda.
If there’s a voice in your head that says you “should” do this or that, you’re not being pulled by what you love, you’re being pushed by guilt and/or shame. And those two lies that you’re living with don’t belong in your life.
As you set your sights on this coming year ahead, pay attention to what’s pulling you. The “should” and the effort that feels like you’re pushing something, that’ll just drain you. And the “someday” payoff that you convince yourself you’ll get to, it’s not real unless it’s on your calendar.
Pay attention to whose agenda you’re fulfilling.
Pay attention to your responses to the season and to the situations you’ve agreed to be in. No one agrees for you. It’s your choice, every step of the way.
Yes, every choice has consequences.
And those work in your favor when you step into owning your life, your responses to every situation, and your focus on your values and priorities.
This IS a season of giving and forgiving.
Maybe you need to start there.
See if those fit with your agenda.
Stay curious and keep making your magic!
Big hugs and love,
