The Laundry Basket Lesson

I learned something from my laundry basket recently. It’s a great metaphor for approaching tasks that sometimes seem like mountains to climb.
To get through the laundry basket that’s sitting there with a pile of clean clothes or to clear a sink full of dirty dishes, you take it on one piece at a time.

A
Time!!!
You can’t just go to the laundry basket in one moment and the next moment all the clothes are folded and neatly put away.
The laundry basket, like any big task in front of you, has multiple components. As such, it is a project. Every project requires you to evaluate its magnitude and measure that against the resources you have available. Those resources include your time and attention. You’ll need to assess competing demands as well (for the laundry basket project, that could be attending to other work-related projects, children, spouses, pets, or your own sustenance).
The quick assessment:
- Will completing this project now move me closer to my goals.
- What resources, specifically how much time, will be required of me?
- Does this project require full completion once it’s begun?
- Can I start now?
Just four quick questions will allow you to move forward or defer.
If the project moves you closer to your goals, keep going!
You’re the only one who knows how much of what resource is available.
Do bite-sized chunks within a prescribed time frame, in order to answer the next question affirmatively.
This idea struck me as I was managing several tasks and realized that I could fold three or four items, leave them, and return later for another batch. All the while, I’m moving the project forward.
And that’s the key, isn’t it? Move the project forward using the resources available to you. Keep going, bit-by-bit, keep going.
And keep making your magic!
See you here next week.
