You made it! Happy New Year!
This one is quick – There is one word that will set you up for failure when you’re looking at your New Year’s Resolutions. Now, I know some people are refusing to make “resolutions.” I used to play that game too. I don’t have resolutions, I just have things I want to accomplish this year. It’s a BS way of not committing.
Commit to YOU.
Invest In YOU.
And… PLAN FOR YOU!!!
In this week’s Wednesdays With Wayne, the focus is on sowing the seeds today for the crop you want to reap tomorrow. That isn’t some haphazard, random activity. That’s a planned event.
None of my DynamicLeader® students ever say, “well, hopefully this will be a better year.”
And that’s the word you’re eliminating: Hopefully…
Just for fun, say these two statements out loud. Seriously, there’s a reason I ask you to do this kind of stuff. Say these out loud:
Okay, yes, the second sentence has more definitive words in it.
And, that’s the point: To plan and to be specific.
I have a list of goals.
I also have a list of timelines and dates by which to accomplish my goals. In project management, it’s called a gate-check. Do you have everything you need in place by this set time to proceed to the next stage?
Set your outcomes.
Work backwards in time.
Let’s just say you want to lose 20 pounds.
You could have that as a wish, something that will hopefully, magically happen for you.
Or you could say, I plan on being 20 pounds lighter by May 23rd.
What is more likely to get you to your goal? Wishing things would be different or knowing that in the next 20 weeks, you have to put conditions in place to lose just one pound per week. ONE POUND PER WEEK. Do-able?
Let’s do that in the opposite direction with your finances.
Let’s say that you want to increase your bank account by a certain number of dollars.
How much? By when? What activities need to happen (or stop happening) for you to get there incrementally on a daily basis?
Here are three key questions:
THAT’S how you will accomplish EVERYTHING on your 2018 goal list. It isn’t by hoping it’ll happen. It’s by planning for it to happen. Put the conditions in place for you to be the person that makes these things happen.
I am wishing you a great New Year (and I’m PLANNING on a great one for myself).
