We know what we know, and we make decisions based on what we know.
Seldom do we make decisions based on what we can envision.
Isn’t that strange?
We have wants and desires and yet most of us fail to choose a path that is aligned, truly aligned, with those wants and desires. Rather than choosing to live from a place – a mindstate – of having the things we desire, we focus on the things we don’t have, things that stop us from pursuing that desire.
Dream Stopper Language is that of thinking from a place of lack:
Truly successful people – and I’ll point out that this kind of thing works in your business and in your personal life – think differently. When I shifted from thinking about the things I didn’t have and stopped giving myself reasons for why something couldn’t happen, my life changed. Dramatically.
Being rational and realistic became phrases, and practices, of the past. I began to explore whose voice it was, whose judgement of rational and realistic, that I was hearing and imposing on myself.
It’s easy to look at all you don’t have and wish you had more.
It’s just as easy, with a little practice, to look at what you really, truly desire and to take leaping steps towards having it.
You have to think beyond your current circumstances. You’re in a certain place now because the thinking you have got you there.
I’ll give you some personal examples. Let’s see if you can relate –
When I was a cub-scout (yes, winding back the clock several decades), my mom gave me money to buy something from the den-mother. I don’t remember what I bought. I remember having a ten-dollar-bill. Hamilton was burning my pocket all day at school, and I had to make sure that I got that ten-dollar bill safely into the hands of the scout leader.
The point is that TEN DOLLARS was A LOT of money. It was SO much that there was an emotional tie to it, making it a hard-burned memory that likely will never fade.
Fast forward to my first job. Ten dollars wasn’t a lot at that point. But that first paycheck was a BIG deal. And then the first raise: Another BIG deal!!!
Do you remember your first job, the amount you made, and how proud you were?
What I thought about back then is much different from what I think about today.
The same is true for you, I’m certain. Could you have fathomed what you’re doing today back when you were 11 years old?
That’s the idea. It doesn’t matter how old you are. Believing that you have all the wisdom you need to think yourself to the next level is a mistake. At 11 years old, I didn’t know that there was another way to think. Now, as a seasoned adult, I know how much more there is to know.
And that’s my leverage. To get what I really want, I can’t think in the way that got me here. So, I seek alternatives. I brainstorm. I don’t listen to the voices of doubt that enter my mind telling me to be realistic.
In fact, the exercise I do now is to become super unrealistic.
I define what I truly desire, then I stay open to paths that present themselves to me to get what I want. Pretty much any path, no matter how ridiculous, will do.
I didn’t accidentally become a number one best-selling author, get on multiple TV shows, executive produce award-winning documentaries, or produce Broadway plays.
I stopped playing small and allowed myself to be ridiculous. That is just a judgment that other people, not willing to take the steps to get what they want, will offer up.
So, step past the judgement.
Step past yesterday’s thinking.
Dare to desire and don’t limit yourself only to the ways you know right now. There are a lot of other paths you can’t see yet.
Current circumstances can’t hold you back unless you fight to hold onto them by being “realistic.” Get ready to get ridiculous.
