This process of Dynamic Transitions is dear to my heart as my book by the same name became a #1 International Best Seller (Get It Here). One of the core foci within the pages is the notion of identifying your values.
Getting from Here To There in this week’s Wednesdays With Wayne.
This one is a simple concept, yet not necessarily that easy.
What mattered to you 10 years ago? I mean, what really, REALLY mattered to you? Was it money? Was it your driving ambition in your career? Was it sex? Was it family? Think about it, really. You’re not the same person you were ten years ago. The journey has changed you.
Are the values you held then the same as the ones you hold now?
Some are. Some aren’t.
That means planning your future needs to be based on future values.
Most people don’t think that way. Most people don’t recognize that they have shed past values and if they do, they usually fail to recognize that they’ll be taking on new values.
Think about your CORE values – these are the ones that you carry with you, no matter what. These are things like honesty, integrity, family, spiritual connection, health. And while these strengthen or become modified, they’re different values than the ones that you had as what I call “peripheral values.”
Do you remember the old, original “Wooly Willy” (click here to see what I’m talking about) – that face with iron filings that you could drag a magnet through and give him a beard or eyebrows and such? By dragging the magnet through the iron filings, some of the core filings stayed clung to the magnet, while other iron filings fell away, replaced by new ones drawn to the magnet.
The values you held in the past may or may not be relevant now. The values you hold now, may or may not be the same that you hold dearly in five years, ten years, or twenty years. How old will you be twenty years from now? Seriously, do the math and put yourself into that thought space. Who are you becoming in the next twenty years?
And with that, what core values do you need to attach to now?
What peripheral values do you need to let go of?
What peripheral values do you need to live into?
The way to own your values is this: Choose one in your head. Make a fist. Call it out using the words, “I Am” and bang the table with your fist. “I Am Honest!” (bang) “I am healthy” (bang) and keep it going. It doesn’t matter if you end up yelling out “I Am Sexy” or “I Am Wealthy.” What values do you hold?
What values do you need to hold?
