You’re probably on the go… again! It’s been a week already and we’re not even done. Like most high performers, you’re feeling the pressure to get it all done.
In this week’s Wednesdays With Wayne I’ll show you THE best way to hold it all together. It actually hit me in the shower and I knew I had to share this with you. Yep, I was wet and naked and thinking of you. (Okay, so… maybe you didn’t need to know that. Let’s keep going here.)
I have a lot on my plate.
So?
What I’ve learned is that I’m not someone who can just punch a clock, do my work, and shut down. I have too much in me. I have too much to share to become some automaton.
And you do too. That’s why you’re here.
So what’s the DynamicLeader® to do? The trick to holding it all together is… LET GO and BREATHE! Yep. That’s the start of it. Did you ever notice that when you’re under pressure, your breath gets shallow? You hunch over a little (to protect yourself). Your lungs don’t expand as they could. Your sleep gets disrupted. You grit (or grind) your teeth. You might have intermittent headaches.
In a recent Wednesdays With Wayne post, I noted the difference between Dis-Stress and Eu-Stress. In my shower, I started mulling over all that I had to do, everything that I’m responsible for, everything to which I’ve said “yes.” And I realized that I allowed myself to cave in on myself. No, I wasn’t on the verge of depression. It is a lonely place though. You know that. The details you’re juggling tend to take longer to tell someone else than to actually just get them done.
So what to do? There’s no magic cure for your calendar woes. There are programs and processes that work. And though I fall into the traps periodically, I know how to get out of them. As a DynamicLeader®, I recognized the symptoms and I climbed out.
Remember the first rule when you find yourself in a hole – stop digging!
All of this happened as a shower-based realization, and within moments I had regained my equilibrium over the day. I stretched and I began breathing deeply, slowly, and deliberately. By looking up and throwing my arms back, my chest expands. My breathing becomes intentional. And, my clarity of thought returned.
No, this didn’t clear the details of the “to do” stuff on my calendar. What it did was to give me perspective.
And sometimes that’s all we need: perspective. I’m still in control of my day. Most of it will get done today. Some of it will get done tonight. Some of it can wait. Some of what was hair-on-fire urgent really isn’t. And in the end, it’s all going to be okay!
Really, the quick tip for holding it all together is not to hold it all in while you’re holding it together. Let it out. Breathe out. Roar. Stretch. Then breathe in.
And repeat.
As you’re reading this now, check your posture. Are you sitting (standing?) in such a way as to allow your lungs to expand when you breathe? Start there. Then stretch further, breathe more deeply, and reset your perspective.
You’ve got this!
See you on some of my programs coming up! I can’t wait to share them with you!
Until then, keep making your magic!!!
